One of the biggest announcements for iRacing was that Dirt Racing will be added to the racing simulation. Years of iRacer’s dreams had been answered (at first via a CRUEL April Fools Day announcement), and now we have a preview video of the second announced dirt track for iRacing: Williams Grove Speedway.
The video goes remarkably in-depth about how iRacing plans on bringing dirt circuits to life, utilizing some new methods. Because of the nature of how a dirt track changes throughout a race, the circuit was scanned twice, once before and once after the event. Then, they would use the comparison to work on the track.
iRacing is also using a method called “Photogrammetry” to get the circuit put together. The track makers will take hundreds of photos, and then will overlay them over the laser scan point cloud. It is also a way to ensure lifelike textures and graphics for the circuit.
